Barton tennis sweeps Hawks for first win

MURFREESBORO, N.C.-A quartet of Bulldogs recorded perfect 6-0, 6-0 scores as the Barton College men's tennis team coasted to a 9-0 victory over host Chowan University Tuesday afternoon.

No. 32 nationally ranked senior Cesar Grobel (Sao Paulo, Brazil) led the Bulldogs charge with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win against the Hawks top draw.

Junior No. 3 Pier-Alexandre Desilets (Beloeil, Canada), junior No. 4 Renato Mendes (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and senior No. 5 Diego Salinas (Mexico City, Mexico) all produced Bulldogs victories in 12 straight games.

Freshman Gabriel Araujo (Recife, Brazil) won his first collegiate dual match at No. 2 by scores of 6-0 and 6-3. Senior No. 6 Leandro Peron (Santana de Parnaiba, Brazil) tallied a 6-1, 6-1 win as the Bulldogs did not lose a set.

BC started the afternoon with three convincing triumphs in doubles. The top pairing of Grobel and Araujo won 8-1; Mendes and Salinas netted an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles; and Peron and Desilets completed pairs play with an 8-0 blanking.

"Certainly anytime you win it is a good thing," said Barton third year head coach Tom Schrecengost. "I'm not sure how much we can take away from these wins in terms of our progress as Chowan is currently re-building so there is a sizable gap in talent between us. But we have another match under our belts as we prepare for the upcoming conference season."

Barton (1-1) will next visit Methodist University on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m.
