WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's tennis team (7-3, 1-0) opened Conference Carolinas play with a 4-3 victory over Belmont Abbey (1-5, 0-2) Tuesday afternoon at the Greenfield School.
Barton was led by its top duo: senior Marissa Stevenson (Kirk Michael, ISLE OF MAN) and junior Eimear Maher (Newbridge, IRELAND). Stevenson and Maher downed Belmont Abbey's Kayla Vaughan (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Morgan Zahnd (Kennesaw, Ga.) by a score of 6-1 at No. 1 doubles to improve to 7-1 as a duo this year.
In addition, both Stevenson and Maher improved to 7-2 on the season in singles play with victories at first and second, respectively, over the Crusaders.
Sophomore Isabella Caballero (La Paz, BOLIVIA) also won at second doubles and third singles for the Bulldogs on the day. Cabellero teamed with junior Claudia Capellades (Barcelona, SPAIN) for the win at No. 2 doubles, 6-4 over Belmont Abbey's Erica Dorn (Alpharetta, Ga.) and sophomore Laura Seib (Beverley Park, AUSTRALIA).
The victory was the Bulldogs' fourth straight triumph as well.
