Box Score MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (2-0, 2-0) won its second road contest in as many tries this season with a convincing 18-2 triumph over Chowan (0-2, 0-1) Wednesday afternoon in Conference Carolinas action at Hawks Field.
Barton was led by junior midfielder Kayli Ashenfelter (Stewartstown, Pa.) with a game-high five goals while junior attacker Angelina Scarpa (Hicksville, N.Y.) totaled nine points – two goals and seven assists – in the victory. Both players were all-league performers last spring.
Barton jumped out to a 10-2 advantage at intermission and kept the pressure on as the Bulldogs shut out the Hawks in the second half while scoring eight more times. Barton held advantages in both shots taken (31-7) and ground balls (43-36) while nine players scored for the visitors.
In goal, junior Katherine Mattena (Salt Lake City, Utah) earned the win after making a pair of saves while Chowan's Mallory Dunker (Pasadena, Md.) took the loss despite stopping seven shots. Tashana Barnett (Spotsylvania, Va.) scored both goals for the Hawks.
Barton faces Lincoln Memorial in its home opener at the Electric Supply Company Field on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m., while Chowan hosts Charleston (W.Va.) Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
