Box Score DUE WEST, S.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (1-0, 1-0) got its 2020 season off to a strong start with a close, 10-9 win over Erskine (0-1, 0-1) Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas action at Huggins Field.
Barton junior attacker Angelina Scarpa (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored a team-high three goals including the contest-winner with 3:03 left as the Bulldogs rallied from three three-goal deficits – 4-1, 5-2 and 6-3 – to earn the victory.
A trio of Bulldogs – sophomore midfielder Lydia Hulshizer (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), freshman attacker Samantha Diaz (Apex, N.C.) and junior midfielder Kayli Ashenfelter (Stewartstown, Pa.) – all scored twice as the visitors held advantages in both shots taken (34-21) and ground balls (11-5) in the win.
Erskine's Katie Schlagenhauf (Clarence Center, N.Y.) scored three times despite the loss. In goal, Barton junior Katherine Mattena (Salt Lake City, Utah) earned the win after making four saves while the Flying Fleet's Mackenzie Myers (Chads Ford, Pa.) took the setback despite 12 saves.
Barton next faces Chowan in Wednesday, February 12, in Murfreesboro, N.C., beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Erskine travels to Central, S.C., to take on Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday starting at 6:00 p.m.
