Box Score BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (6-4, 3-2) defeated Lees-McRae (0-8, 0-5) by a 17-7 score in a Conference Carolinas match Sunday afternoon at Tate Field.
The Bulldogs were led by sophomore midfielder Kayli Ashenfelter (Stewartstown, Pa.), who scored a career-high nine goals in addition to two assists for 11 total points as Barton reeled off 10 straight goals after falling behind by a 4-2 score to take complete control of the contest.
Ashenfelter leads the team in both goals (40) and total points (48) while junior midfielder Morgan McGuffin (Huntingtown, Md.) added four scores as the Barton held a 33-22 advantage in shots taken in the victory. McGuffin also had the game-winning goal at the 5:31 mark of the second quarter.
In addition, sophomore attacker Angelina Scarpa (Hicksville, N.Y.) continued her stellar all-around play with a pair of goals and four assists for the Bulldogs.
The Bobcats – who scored the first three goals of the contest – were led by Beth Haynes (Woodstock, Ga.) with four goals but Lees-McRae remained winless on the season. In goal, Barton sophomore Katherine Mattena (Salt Lake City, Utah) earned the win after making eight saves while Lees-McRae's Emily Davidson (Prosper, Texas) took the loss despite 11 stops on the afternoon.
Barton returns to the field on Wednesday, March 27, against Chowan beginning at 4:00 p.m., while Lees-McRae takes on North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C., on Tuesday starting at 5:00 p.m.
