Barton women's lacrosse prevails over Erskine, 11-8, in the season opener

Box Score

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (1-0) opened the 2019 season with an 11-8 victory over Erskine (0-2) Saturday morning at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex.  The victory was the first under new mentor Regan Denham.

The Bulldogs were led by sophomore attacker Kayli Ashenfelter (Stewartstown, Pa.) with four goals while junior midfielder Rebecca Fraser (Chesapeake, Va.) scored three times as Barton was able to hold on after taking a 9-3 lead into intermission.

Both players scored all seven goals combined before intermission while Erskine opened the second half with a 4-0 run but couldn't get any closer than two scores.  Amanda Epstein (Commack, N.Y.) and Kayleigh Burns (Dacula, Ga.) both scored twice for the Flying Fleet in the setback.

The shots were even at 29 each while Barton held a 21-18 edge in ground balls.  In goal, Barton sophomore Katherine Mattena (Salt Lake City, Utah) stopped eight shots while Erskine goalkeeper, Gabi Coward (Elgin, S.C.), suffered the loss despite tallying seven saves.

Barton is next scheduled to play Coker on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., at home but the contest is more than likely going to be moved.  Meanwhile, Erskine hosts Mars Hill on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.
