Barton women's lacrosse downs Coker, 14-9, on team's new synthetic turf field

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's lacrosse team (2-1) opened its brand new synthetic turf field with a 14-9 victory over Coker (1-2) on a rainy, chilly and windy Friday evening.

Barton sophomore midfielder Kayli Ashenfelter (Stewartstown, Pa.) led all scorers with five goals as the Bulldogs scored eight straight goals over both halves after falling behind by a 5-2 score with just over 12 minutes left before intermission.  Ashenfelter now has a team-leading 11 goals on the season. 

Barton sophomore attacker Brooke Lonergan (Grand Haven, Mich.) added three scores including the game-winner as the Bulldogs forced the Cobras into 35 turnovers.  Sophomore attacker Angelina Scarpa (Hicksville, N.Y.) added a score and four assists for the Bulldogs, who held a 24-20 edge in shots taken.

Coker's Faith Kent (Winter Springs, Fla.) scored four times for the visitors despite the loss.  In goal, sophomore Katherine Mattena (Salt Lake City, Utah) earned the win after making four saves while the Cobras' goalkeeper, Olivia Fladung (Little Mountain, S.C.), made three stops in the losing effort.

Barton next travels to Rocky Mount, N.C., to take on North Carolina Wesleyan on Thursday beginning at 4:00 p.m., while Coker faces Chowan in Murfreesboro, N.C., on Wednesday starting at 3:00 p.m.
