Barton women's lacrosse suffers first loss of the year, 7-3 to North Greenville

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (1-1, 1-1) suffered its first loss of the season by a 7-3 score to North Greenville (2-1, 1-1) Friday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium in a Conference Carolinas game.

North Greenville's Rachel Kellogg (Orlando, Fla.) scored four goals to lead the home team including the first two scores with the opening goal just 58 seconds into the contest.

The Crusaders' defense was the story, limiting the Bulldogs to just three goals on 11 shots with two of those scores coming from sophomore attacker Kayli Ashenfelter (Stewartstown, Pa.).  Ashenfelter leads the team with five goals on the year.  Sophomore midfielder Natalie Brooks (Raleigh, N.C.) scored the other goal for Barton at the 4:27 mark of the first half.

North Greenville, who totaled 30 shots on the afternoon, saw its goalkeeper – Sydney Turner (Fountain Inn, S.C.) – earned the win after stopping five shots.   Barton sophomore Katherine Mattena (Salt Lake City, Utah) suffered the loss in goal despite 12 saves on the afternoon.

Barton will next travel to Rocky Mount, N.C., to take on North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., while North Greenville faces Catawba on the road on Wednesday in Salisbury, N.C., beginning at 7:00 p.m.
