BELMONT, N.C. – Freshmen Kayli Ashenfelter and Angelina Scarpa tried to rally Barton College from a deep first-half hole with four straight goals late in the first half, but the Lady Bulldogs did not score again in a 20-4 Conference Carolinas loss at Belmont Abbey College on Saturday.
Ashenfelter, a resident of Stewartstown, Pa., scored the first two goals during BC's run and three of the four overall, giving her 30 for the season. Scarpa added the other goal, her 17th of the year.
Barton (5-7, 3-4) trailed 9-0 when Ashenfelter first found the net for the Lady Bulldogs with 10:48 left before intermission. She scored the last of the goals off an Alyssa Torres assist with 5:53 remaining, cutting the deficit to 9-4 and forcing a BAC timeout.
However, Belmont Abbey (10-3, 6-1) scored two quick goals in the final 1:37 of the period, then held Barton to just four second-half shot attempts in outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 9-0 over the final 30 minutes of play.
Rebecca Luca, the Conference Carolinas leader in goals and points, tallied five goals and six assists to pace the Crusaders, pushing her totals to 61 goals and 89 points on the year.
Marin Felsoci and Rebecca Stromberg added four goals each for Belmont Abbey, which has now scored 20 points or more in each of its past three matches.
Barton's freshman goalie, Katherine Mattena, posted nine saves and also led the Lady Bulldogs in groundballs with four.
The contest was the final regular-season road match for Barton. The Lady Bulldogs will play their final three contests at home, where they are 3-0 on the year. BC's next match is Saturday against Emmanuel College.
