MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Qualifying for the Conference Carolinas Championship in just its second season as a program will have to be accomplishment enough for the women's lacrosse team right now.
The Lady Bulldogs made their first appearance ever in the league tournament on Wednesday as the No. 7 seed, but could do little with conference power and No. 2 seed University of Mount Olive.
The Trojans (14-4) scored eight goals over the first 15 minutes of the quarterfinal match and held Barton (5-10) to one shot in the first half before letting off the gas in an eventual 15-2 triumph.
Freshman Brooke Lonergan tallied both goals for the Lady Bulldogs, scoring on a free position shot for the first goal of the second half, and adding another score 10 minutes later off an assist from Rebecca Fraser.
Mount Olive completed the match with a 37-9 edge in shots. Barton keeper Katherine Mattena registered 14 saves to prevent more damage by UMO.
Fraser collected a match-high nine groundballs and three draw controls as well as BC's only caused turnover. Mattena added six groundballs and Kayli Ashenfelter picked up five.
The Trojans committed just 11 turnovers in the contest compared to 26 for Barton.
BC posted three conference victories in its second season. The Lady Bulldogs will return the majority of their team members next year, as the squad had no seniors and only one junior.
