by Doug Page

WILSON, N.C. Riding an eight-match winning streak into its match on Thursday, the Mercyhurst University Lakers would prove to be too much for the Barton College Bulldogs after earning an 8-1 victory against Barton at the BC Tennis Complex in a non-conference women's tennis contest.

Barton (3-7) recorded its only point of the match at the No. 3 position of singles play as sophomore Marissa Stevenson tallied a 6-3, 6-3 win against the Lakers Adrianna Jeffress. Mercyhurst (9-0) took a 3-0 lead in the match after sweeping through doubles competition and would start by winning each of the first-two singles matchups.

BC's top tandem of junior Daria Avram and Stevenson battled against Mercyhurst's Saioa Gomez and Adina Spahalic before dropping an 8-6 decision against the Lakers. Mercyhurst won both of their other doubles matchups against BC with an 8-3 winner at the No. 2 spot followed by an 8-4 victory at the No. 3 position.

Junior Vanessa Sanoja gave Kayla Frost a run for her money at the No. 2 spot as Sanoja won the opening set 6-2 before dropping the second set 6-3 and the third set 10-5.

The Lakers also tallied wins at the No. 1 and No. 4-6 positions against BC as Gomez recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win in the top spot against Barton junior Daria Avram.
