MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton women's tennis team (4-2, 1-0) opened Conference Carolinas play with a 5-2 win over Mount Olive (1-4, 0-1) Monday afternoon at the John Neal Walker Center.
The Bulldogs were led by the duo of sophomore
Alejandra Carmona Garcia (Fraga, SPAIN) and junior
Claudia Zaratiegui Marquez (Barcelona, SPAIN).
The duo won at third doubles and picked up wins at fifth and sixth singles, respectively, as the Bulldogs took five of six matches in singles play after dropping the doubles point.
At third singles, junior
Aarni Yellu (Hyderabad, INDIA) won over Mount Olive's Nina Bernier (Sainte-Rose, GUADELOUPE) by a score of 6-1, 3-6 and 6-2 in a key singles' match.
Barton remains on the road to face Ferrum in Ferrum, Va., on Saturday, March 14, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Mount Olive, meanwhile, faces Fairmont State in Hilton Head, S.C., on Thursday starting at 12:30 p.m.
