DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The spring break fun in Daytona Beach came to a jarring halt Wednesday night once the Barton College women's lacrosse team took to the field against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, as the host Eagles routed BC, 21-5, in a non-conference matchup.
The contest was never in question, as Embry-Riddle rolled to a 9-0 lead in a span of just over 10 minutes. The Eagles, 5-1 and members of a Sunshine State Conference with four nationally-ranked teams, led 16-2 at the break after out-shooting the Lady Bulldogs 29-8 in the period.
Barton's first three goals came from leading scorer Jenna Brunclik, who now holds the program's single-season record with 23. The freshman from Chesapeake Beach, Md., surpassed the previous record of 21 posted by Kianna Jimenez last year in the program's inaugural season.
The Lady Bulldogs (3-3) also received goals from Natalie Brooks and Brooke Lonergan, and assists from Rebecca Fraser and Alyssa Torres. Fraser also won seven draw controls. Goalie Katherine Mattena recorded 11 saves and also collected a match-high seven groundballs.
Embry-Riddle finished the night with a 37-16 advantage in shots and a 19-9 edge in draw controls. Barton committed 25 turnovers while ERAU made just 15.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to Conference Carolinas action next Wednesday when they visit Chowan University for a 4 p.m. matchup. Barton is currently 1-1 in league play.
