RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior Vanessa Sanoja and freshman Ada Vargas tallied the lone doubles victory for the Barton College Bulldogs on Monday against Shaw University at Worthdale Park. The Bears tallied a 5-4 victory against the Bulldogs in a non-conference women's tennis matchup.
The No. 2 doubles tandem of Sanoja and Vargas earned a 9-7 victory for the Bulldogs (2-6) in a hard-fought matchup against the Bears (2-1) duo of Carmen Mantecon and Andrijana Martic.
Shaw recorded an 8-5 win at the No. 1 doubles position as Daniela Vanko and Marilyne Kamegne bested Barton's Marissa Stevenson and Daria Avram. The Bears also dispatched BC's duo of Claudia Capellades and Whitney Hamilton by a score of 8-3 at the No. 3 position.
Entering singles play with a 2-1 deficit, BC looked to claw its way back with a 6-0, 6-1 win by Stevenson at the No. 3 position against Shaw's Kamegne. Vargas would also record a 6-0, 6-4 victory for Barton at the No. 4 position, while Sanoja defeated Mantecon 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 position.
The Bears tallied victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots as Aleem defeated Capellades 6-2, 6-1 and Fekete bested Hamilton 6-2, 7-6.
Avram and Vanko battled at the No. 1 position as Avram won the opening set (6-3) before dropping the second (6-4) to knot the match 1-1. Vanko would outlast Avram in the third set (6-4) to secure the match.
Barton makes the trip to Bluefield, W.V. on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup against Bluefield State and returns home to open a three-game homestand starting with Mercyhurst University on Thursday at 2 p.m.
