WILSON, N.C. – Barton College freshman Jenna Brunclik broke the women's lacrosse program's single-game scoring record on Monday, recording 10 goals in a 22-4 Conference Carolinas victory over Southern Wesleyan University.
The Chesapeake Beach, Md., resident shared the previous record of seven with several others. She now has 41 goals for the year, extending her single-season record in that category.
Brunclik's second goal of the day, which came off a Rebecca Fraser assist with 18:32 left in the first half, put Barton into the lead for good after the Lady Bulldogs (5-5, 3-3) got off to a slow start against the winless Warriors (0-10, 0-5), a first-year program.
She added another goal just under a minute later off a Kayli Ashenfelter assist to increase the lead to 4-2, and Brooke Lonergan added her 15th goal of the year with 16:04 remaining in the period to put BC up 5-2. Ashenfelter tallied consecutive goals, the latter on a free position shot with 9:40 left before intermission, to finally give Barton some separation at 7-2.
Southern Wesleyan's leading scorer, Abigail Welch, struck for four first-half goals to keep the Warriors in sight at the break, 9-4. However, Welch was forced to the sideline after being charged with her second yellow card of the match with just under 25 minutes to play, and SWU was outscored 13-0 in the second half without her.
The 22 goals scored by Barton matched the program's single-game record, which the Lady Bulldogs set just two matches earlier in a victory over Lees-McRae College.
Ashenfelter finished the contest with five goals and two assists, while Angelina Scarpa chipped in three goals and an assist. Barton also received two goals from Lonergan, and one each from Natalie Brooks and Alyssa Torres.
Fraser contributed three assists, caused six turnovers, collected nine groundballs and won eight draw controls. Ashenfelter also won eight draw controls, and Brooks provided five groundballs and caused four turnovers.
Barton enjoyed a 45-6 advantage in shots and claimed 32 groundballs.
SWU goalie Kaeleigh McDaniel posted 12 saves in the loss. Katherine Mattena recorded one save for BC in the win.
BC will hit the road for its next two matches, beginning with a visit to Hartsville, S.C., for an April 4 meeting with Coker College.
