WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's lacrosse team set a school record for goals scored in a match on Friday while taking a 22-11 Conference Carolinas victory over Lees-McRae College.
Now in its second season of competition, Barton set the new program high despite playing the match a man-down due to injuries.
Freshmen Jenna Brunclik and Kayli Ashenfelter each tallied seven goals, and freshman Brooke Lonergan added six for the Lady Bulldogs, now 4-4 overall and 2-2 in league play. Brunclik matched a season-high with her seven, while Ashenfelter and Lonergan both set new single-game highs.
Angelina Scarpa, yet another freshman, provided five assists, running her season total to 20.
Lees-McRae (1-3, 1-1) received six of its 11 goals from senior Peyton LeCompte.
Barton never trailed in the contest, as Lonergan, Brunclik and Ashenfelter each scored a goal within the first eight minutes to put the Lady Bulldogs up 3-0.
The two sides took turns scoring the next five goals, making the margin 5-3, before Beth Haynes netted a free position shot to help Lees-McRae close within one at 5-4 with 15:53 left in the first half.
However, Lonergan scored consecutive goals over the next 1:12, then assisted a Brunclik goal to put BC in front by four for the first time, 9-5. Ashenfelter tacked on a goal off a Rebecca Fraser assist with 2:32 left before the half, and Barton held a five-goal cushion.
The two teams traded scores to close out the half with BC leading 11-6, but Barton scored the first five goals of the second period over a span of six and a half minutes to put the match out of reach for the Bobcats.
Two keepers for Lees-McRae combined for 10 saves. Freshman Katherine Mattena posted four saves in the win for BC.
Barton will face a much more difficult challenge in its next match, as the Lady Bulldogs visit preseason league favorite and nationally-ranked No. 6 Limestone College on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Gaffney, S.C.
