WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College Bulldogs won all but one game at home on Saturday against the Edinboro University Fighting Scots as BC swept through doubles play en route to an 8-1 victory in a non-conference women's tennis matchup.
Barton (4-7) won four of their five singles matches in straight sets and saw junior Daria Avram rally to win her matchup at the No. 1 position after dropping the opening set. Edinboro (4-2) almost squeaked out a win at the No. 1 doubles spot before dropping an 8-6 decision. Marija Tmusic tallied the lone point of the match for the Fighting Scots with her victory in singles play.
Avram and sophomore Marissa Stevenson held on for an 8-6 win at the No. 1 pairing in doubles play against Edinboro's Laura Lopez and Tatiana Batalla, while junior Vanessa Sanoja and freshman Ada Vargas notched a win for BC at the No. 2 position against Roxana Yeh and Tmusic.
Barton would enter singles play with a 3-0 lead as freshman Claudia Capellades and junior Whitney Hamilton handed the tandem of Jelena Vucenovic and Payton Tomasko an 8-3 defeat.
The Bulldogs tallied four straight-set victories as Stevenson won 6-0, 6-0 against Yeh and Hamilton 6-1, 6-2 against Shelby Hutton. Vargas recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 4 position for Barton, while Sanoja bested Batalla 7-5, 6-4.
Avram and Lopez found themselves in a battle in their matchup as Lopez took the opening set by a score of 6-4. Avram responded by winning the second set 7-5 and taking the third set to secure her match against Lopez.
Barton closes a three-game homestand on Tuesday with a matchup against new Conference Carolinas member Chowan University at 2 p.m.
