MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Barton College freshman Jenna Brunclik recorded her first collegiate goal on Saturday, but the score came in the waning moments of a 20-1 Conference Carolinas loss by the Lady Bulldogs at the hands of defending regular-season champion University of Mount Olive.
Brunclik, from Chesapeake Beach, Md., struck with 40 seconds left in the match to help Barton avoid a shutout in its season-opener. The shot was the last of seven attempts on the day by the Lady Bulldogs.
Mount Olive produced 33 attempts on the day. The Lady Trojans scored on five of those in the first nine minutes of the match, and saw last year's freshman of the year in the league, Jackie Kaderabek, add four goals over the final 12 minutes of the first half to take a commanding 12-0 lead into intermission.
Kaderabek was one of three Trojans with four goals on the day. She also added a pair of assists to join Michaela Ciciarelli with a team-high six points on the afternoon.
Barton sophomore Rebecca Fraser, the NCAA Division II leader in groundballs a year ago, continued where she left off last spring, collecting five while also forcing three UMO turnovers, both match-highs.
The Lady Bulldogs collected 11 groundballs as a team while giving up 14, and both teams posted five caused turnovers. BC lost the overall turnover battle, 9 to 13. Barton was 7-of-12 on clear opportunities, while Mount Olive converted 14-of-15 chances.
BC's freshman goalie, Katherine Mattena, posted four saves during her debut in net for the Lady Bulldogs. Three UMO goalies combined for five saves for the Trojans.
Barton will make its 2018 home debut on Tuesday, Feb. 13, when it hosts North Carolina Wesleyan College in a 6 p.m. match at the Barton Outdoor Athletics Complex.
