RALEIGH, N.C. – A 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 singles by junior Vanessa Sanoja secured a win for the Barton College women's tennis team on Thursday against Meredith College. The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Avenging Angels 9-0 on the campus of Meredith in Raleigh, N.C.
The No. 1 doubles tandem of junior Daria Avram and sophomore Marissa Stevenson recorded an 8-0 win against the Meredith (0-1) duo of Jacqueline Benton and Elizabeth Johnson to give Barton (1-3) a 1-0 lead in the match.
Barton's No. 3 tandem of freshman Claudia Capellades and junior Whitney Hamilton dropped a pair of games against Emily Wilkinson and Logan King but would give the Lady Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the match with an 8-2 victory. Sanoja and freshman Ada Vargas defeated Gillian Emerson and Alexandra Cheney 8-1 at the No. 2 doubles position to send Barton into singles play with a 3-0 lead against the Avenging Angels.
Stevenson would dispatch of Johnson 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 position of singles play to move BC within a point of securing a victory. Sanoja bested Benton to put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 5-0 in a matchup of both sides No. 2 players.
Capellades handed King a 6-0, 6-2 loss at the No. 5 position, while Vargas defeated Wilkinson 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4. Avram was the next to last to finish at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-2, 6-0 against Emerson. Junior Jordyn Brown capped the sweep for BC by earning a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 position against Alexandra Cheney.
Barton makes a trip to Greenville, N.C. for a match against NCAA Division I member East Carolina University on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs will host their home opener against Methodist University on Feb. 24 beginning at 10 a.m.
