RICHMOND, Va. – The Barton men's swimming team stands alone in first place after day one with 535 points at Randolph-Macon's Yellow Jacket Invitational Friday at the Greater Richmond Aquatic Partnership Poll.
The Bulldogs' men's squad has 535 points – 88 more than Catholic University of America – while the Barton women's team has 369 points, good for fourth-place overall. Randolph-Macon (464 points) leads the women's competition.
Both the women's (1:38.07) and men's (1:26.98) teams won the 200-yard freestyle relays for the Bulldogs. The women's quartet consisted of sophomores Kleanza Cathers (Kitimat, British Columbia, CANADA), Nicola Macdonald (Durban, SOUTH AFRICA) and Alayna Moore (Terre Haute, Ind.) and freshman Adalaya Nemitz (Waxhaw, N.C.). Nemitz also won the women's 200-yard individual medley with a school-record time of 2:13.65.
Meanwhile, the men's 200-yard freestyle relay team consisted of sophomore Jaksa Gabric (Zagreb, CROATIA), juniors Colin Strickland (Bucyrus, Kan.) and Robert Zamorano (Woodstock, Ga.) and freshman Alexander Hoscila (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) for Barton.
In addition, the Bulldogs' men's 400-yard medley relay team – Gabric, freshmen Tegan Brown (Acworth, Ga.), Colton Spence (New Hill, N.C.) and Jonathan York (Midlothian, Va.) – placed first overall with a new program mark of 3:29.87. York also established a new school record in the 500-yard freestyle (4:41.24) and taking top honors.
The Barton men's and women's swimming teams will wrap competition on Saturday at the invitational with sessions at 8:45 a.m., and 4:45 p.m.
