SUMTER, S.C. – The Barton College women's tennis team continued its run in the Conference Carolinas Tournament with a 5-0 win Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at the Palmetto Tennis Complex.
Barton, the No. 6 seed, upset the No. 2 seed Warriors to advance to the championship match for the first time in at least the last 10 years of competition.
The Lady Bulldogs began doubles play with three consecutive wins, highlighted by an 8-5 win at No. 1 by the duo of sophomore Daria Avram and freshman Marissa Stevenson. The No. 2 team of sophomore Vanessa Sanoja and freshman Elle Vietz won 8-7 (7-4) as did the No. 3 team of seniors Lorraine Chon-Qui and Dana Kelly.
In singles play, Barton won twice more at No. 2 and No. 5 to earn the five points needed to secure the win. Stevenson was a 6-0, 6-1 winner in the No. 2 position, while Kelly won 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 5 spot.
Barton will now take on rival and No. 5 seed Mount Olive tomorrow at 8 a.m.
