SUMTER, S.C. – The Barton women's tennis team advanced to the Conference Carolinas Tournament Semifinals with a 5-1 upset of North Greenville University on Friday afternoon at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
Barton, the tournament's No. 6 seed, went ahead 3-0 after the conclusion of doubles play. The No. 1 duo of sophomore Daria Avram and freshman Marissa Stevenson won 8-0, while the No. 2 team of freshman Elle Vietz and sophomore Vanessa Sanoja secured an 8-7 (7-5) victory. Seniors Lorraine Chon-Qui and Dana Kelly teamed up for an 8-6 win the No. 3 position.
North Greenville, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, won 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 5 singles matchup for the team's only point of the match.
In singles play, Barton won two matches to reach the five-point plateau and end the contest. Stevenson was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 1 and Sanoja was a 6-3, 6-1 victor in the No. 3 position.
The Lady Bulldogs will now advance to the tournament semifinals to take on No. 2 seed Southern Wesleyan University tomorrow at Noon.
