WILSON, N.C. – Sophomore Daria Avram's singles victory was a bright spot for the Barton women's tennis team in an 8-1 loss to NCAA Division I Campbell University on Wednesday afternoon at the Barton Tennis Complex.
The Fighting Camels collected all three points in doubles play, winning by scores of 6-1, 6-3 and 6-2 at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 1, respectively.
Campbell secured the match decision with singles wins at No. 5 and No. 4, before Barton freshman Marissa Stevenson put up a fight in the No. 2 position. The Isle of Man native fell 7-5 in the first set of play and was forced to retire before the start of the second set leading to defeat.
Avram gave the Lady Bulldogs their lone point of the match with a 7-5, 6-4 victory in the top singles position.
Barton returns to league play when it hosts King (Tenn.) University and Lees-McRae College this weekend in Wilson.
