BELMONT, N.C. – The Barton women's tennis team evened its Conference Carolinas record with a 6-3 road win over Belmont Abbey College on Tuesday afternoon at the Reidy Tennis Center.
Barton took an early lead in the match with doubles' victories at No. 2 and No. 1. After Belmont Abbey took the first doubles point with a win at No. 3, BC's duo of sophomore Vanessa Sanoja and freshman Elle Vietz won 8-5 to even the score. Sophomore Daria Avram and freshman Marissa Stevenson put Barton ahead with another 8-5 win in the top position.
Stevenson began singles play with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2, before Sanoja gained the team's fourth point with an equally dominant 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3. The Crusaders picked up a win at No. 5, but senior Dana Kelly clinched the match for the Lady Bulldog with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No.6.
Belmont Abbey's final point came via a three-set match in the No. 4 position, while Avram won her No. 1 matchup in three sets, 6-7, 6-2, 10-7.
Barton hosts NCAA Division I Campbell University tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Barton Tennis Complex in its next match.
