WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's lacrosse team claimed its first victory in program history on Friday night by downing Hollins University, 21-11, at the Barton Outdoor Athletics Complex.
Senior Kelly Dolan, who had three goals on the year coming into the match, produced seven against Hollins, a new single-game high for Barton's first-year program. The Naples, Fla., resident also contributed a pair of assists, both on goals by sophomore Aryanna Fahnestock, who recorded four in the match. Senior Kianna Jimenez added five goals, giving her a team-high 12 for the season.
Lauren Bullock, a sophomore transfer, notched her first two goals as a Bulldog, and freshman Margaret McCaffity collected her first collegiate goal. Barton also received goals from Courtney Willis and Alyssa Torres in the historic win.
Hollins (1-7) was paced by Valerie Helmbrecht, who tallied nine of her team's 11 goals to reach 45 goals for the year.
Barton never trailed in the contest after getting early goals from Jimenez and Bullock. Hollins pulled within one on a goal by Hope Shaw, but Jimenez and Bullock both struck again, and Dolan added the first of her many goals to put BC up 5-1 less than 10 minutes into the contest.
Hollins climbed back within three goals on two occasions, at 6-3 and 7-4, but Jimenez powered through to score a man-down goal for Barton, and Dolan scored twice as the Lady Bulldogs pulled away to a 10-4 lead. BC led 13-6 at the break, and Dolan added two quick goals to open the second half and push Barton further in front.
The Lady Bulldogs enjoyed a 37-19 edge in shots and forced 19 turnovers while committing just 12.
Barton claimed 22 ground balls to 12 for Hollins, with Rebecca Fraser collecting six of those ground balls for BC while also forcing five Hollins turnovers.
Hollins keeper Delaney Waller (1-7) posted 11 saves in the match, while Kia Morris (1-3) claimed six saves while earning her first win in net for the Lady Bulldogs.
Barton will seek its first Conference Carolinas victory and first winning streak on Saturday when it hosts Erskine College at 4 p.m.
