TIGERVILLE, S.C. – After a three-week break from competition, the Barton College women's lacrosse team returned to action on Thursday with a 19-1 Conference Carolinas loss at North Greenville University.
The Lady Bulldogs (0-5, 0-5) limited the Crusaders (3-4, 1-2) to just two goals in the first nine and a half minutes of the match, as freshman Kia Morris recorded four saves over that span in her collegiate debut as a goalie.
However, North Greenville added three more goals in the next two minutes as it began to pull away and led 11-1 at intermission.
The Crusaders posted a 35-5 edge in shots in the contest. Morris, who had started the previous four matches in the field at defender, finished the afternoon with eight saves during her first game in net.
Barton received its lone goal on the day late in the first half. After Rebecca Fraser caused an NGU turnover and collected the ground ball, the Lady Bulldogs drove to the offensive end and set up a scoring opportunity for senior Kianna Jimenez, who found the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Fraser gained a team-high five ground balls in the match, and now has 12 in her past two matches. Senior Kelly Dolan won a team-high four draw controls. Barton earned eight draw controls as a team, while North Greenville produced 14.
Despite the lopsided loss, BC's first-year program did show some progress, as the Lady Bulldogs committed a season-low 15 turnovers.
Barton will remain in Tigerville overnight, and will square off against University of Montevallo in a neutral-site match at NGU's Pepsi Stadium tomorrow at 2 p.m.
