WILSON, N.C. – The first sentence in the history of women's lacrosse at Barton College was perfectly crafted Friday afternoon.
Just 1:16 into the program's debut, senior co-captain Kianna Jimenez threaded a shot past a University of Mount Olive defender and UMO keeper Samantha Thompson to give the Lady Bulldogs their first goal ever and a 1-0 lead.
The score brought a roar from the home crowd at the Barton Outdoor Athletics Complex, many of whom were witnessing lacrosse for the first time as well.
The rest of the page, however, turned into a story that will be forever skipped.
The much more experienced and much deeper Trojans, runners-up in Conference Carolinas each of the past two seasons, tied the match less than two minutes later, took the lead a minute after that, and went on to post a 25-1 league victory.
Mount Olive junior Michaela Ciciarelli scored eight times and freshman Kelly Young made an impressive debut for UMO with six goals.
The Trojans enjoyed a 37-4 edge in shots. Barton sophomore Tiffany Fowler posted nine saves in net for the Lady Bulldogs.
Senior Kelly Dolan had a pair of shots on goal for BC, one stopped by each of UMO's two keepers, Thompson and Sienna Miller.
Barton will make its first road trip as a program on February 11, visiting Belmont Abbey College, before returning home to face perennial league champion Limestone College on February 19.
