WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's tennis team suffered a pair of 5-4 losses over the weekend to Conference Carolinas foes North Greenville University and Southern Wesleyan University in South Carolina.
North Greenville 5, Barton 4
The Lady Bulldogs began the weekend in Tigerville, S.C. against the Crusaders of North Greenville University and took a 2-1 lead following doubles play.
Barton's No. 3 doubles team of Lorraine Chon-Qui and Dana Kelly won 8-4 to secure BC's first point before the No. 1 duo of Daria Avram and Marissa Stevenson claimed an 8-7 (7-4) decision.
However, North Greenvlle won at both No. 4 and No. 6 singles to take a one-point lead before the Lady Bulldogs tied the match at three points apiece with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 by Stevenson.
Sophomore Vanessa Sanoja gave her team the advantage by winning 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles position before NGU rallied to win the match with consecutive victories at No. 5 and No. 1.
Southern Wesleyan 5, Barton 4
Barton's weekend ended in the same way it started as the team suffered another one-point loss in conference play.
The Warriors were ahead after doubles play with the Lady Bulldog's lone point coming on an 8-7 (7-4) win by Avram and Stevenson in the No. 1 position.
In singles play, Southern Wesleyan won in the No. 5 slot before Sanoja and Stevenson claimed victories at No. 3 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
SWU secured the league victory with wins at No. 5 and No. 1, which went to a tiebreaker. D. Kelly took a 6-4, 6-1 decision in the No. 6 singles contest with the match already decided.
Barton (3-4, 0-2) will return to the court on Wednesday, March 1 with a league contest against Pfeiffer University in Wilson, N.C. at the Barton Tennis Complex.
