WILSON, N.C. – Brothers Angelos and Vasilis Mandilaris each posted 11 kills in leading the Barton men's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-17) win over non-conference opponent Coker College on Friday night in Wilson Gym.
Barton (10-4) committed just 10 errors on offense in the match and hit .426 as a unit while forcing the Cobras (9-3) into a .080 hitting percentage with 21 attack errors.
Freshman Angelos Mandilaris registered his first career double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs while also totaling three service aces. Sophomore Vasilis Mandilaris matched his younger sibling's kill total and hit .421 at the net, while fellow sophomore Justice Lord totaled six kills without an error.
The first set was a tightly contested affair despite Barton getting out to an early 5-2 lead. Coker battled back and tied the set three separate times before eventually taking a 12-11 lead after a Aleksa Bijelic service ace. The Coker lead extended to a 17-14 advantage until three unanswered points from Barton tied the score at 17-all.
After the score was again tied at 21-21, two kills from Lord and back-to-back service aces from Angelos Mandilaris gave Barton the set one win.
In the second set of play, Barton trailed 2-1 before rattling off eight consecutive points to build a 9-2 lead. The Bulldogs, who hit .706 in the frame, scored five of the set's final six points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Coker led 5-4 in the early stages of the third set before Barton retook the lead at 6-5 following consecutive kills from V. Mandilaris and sophomore Nick Leary. BC never trailed again in the match, closing the contest on a 7-3 run for its second victory in a row.
Barton returns to Conference Carolinas action next weekend when the team hosts Pfeiffer University on Friday, March 3 followed by a home match against Belmont Abbey College on Saturday, March. 4 in Wilson Gym.
