WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's lacrosse team, playing just its third match in school history on Sunday, got a glimpse at the standard it hopes to establish some day for the program.
The Lady Bulldogs hosted Limestone College, the winner of every Conference Carolinas title since the league began sponsoring the sport in 2005. The Saints, entering the contest ranked No. 13 nationally and fresh off a win over No. 9 Queens University, showed off a precision offense, scoring 10 goals in just over 10 minutes of play on their way to a 22-2 victory at the Barton Outdoor Athletics Complex.
Senior Jaylen Schulte scored four goals for Limestone (3-0, 2-0), giving her 12 for the season. Three other players added three goals each for the Saints, which took 29 shots and scored on all but seven of them.
Barton managed just three shots, but two of them did go in the net. Senior Kianna Jimenez registered her second goal of the year in the first half, and freshman Alyssa Torres recorded her first collegiate goal in the second half.
Laura Franco, Carson Molaro and Rebecca Fraser each collected a pair of ground balls for the Lady Bulldogs, with Fraser also earning a pair of draw controls. Tiffany Fowler posted three saves in net for Barton.
The Lady Bulldogs can take solace in the fact that, in their first three games as a program, they have lost to the top three teams in Conference Carolinas from a year ago – Limestone, University of Mount Olive and Belmont Abbey College.
On Wednesday, Barton will host Chowan University, which is competing in the league for the first time as an associate member. The Hawks were 1-13 as an independent last year after a pair of four-win seasons the two previous years.
Chowan is 0-1 on the season, having lost at Mount Olive in its opener, 19-1.
Wednesday's match is slated for 3 p.m. at the Barton Outdoor Athletics Complex.
