WILSON, N.C. – Seven members of the Barton College men's soccer team netted their first goal of the season on Monday as the Bulldogs downed an outmatched Regent University squad, 9-0, at the Barton Outdoor Athletics Complex.
For six of those players, the goals were the first of their collegiate career, including all-conference keeper Jens Madsen Hordvik, who was playing in the field instead of between the pipes. Also collecting their first career Barton goal were seniors Omar Gonzalez and Seth Russ, junior Luke Miller, sophomore George Venturella and freshman Ricardo Sanchez.
Senior David Vega and sophomore Iuri Aleixo added goals as well, both finding the back of the net for the second time in their BC careers.
Freshman Sean O'Brien posted the first two assists of his young career in the win, and Gonzalez contributed two assists as well before scoring himself.
Other than Hordvik, who was playing out of position, the Bulldogs (5-10-1) did not play any of their usual starters in the match against the Royals (2-5), a National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association program based in Virginia Beach, Va.
Barton enjoyed a 35-8 edge in shots, including a 27-2 margin in the first half as the Bulldogs built a 5-0 lead.
Junior Jacob Baird, making his first career start in net for the Bulldogs, recorded five saves in earning his first win and first shutout.
The margin of victory was the largest since Barton beat Chowan, 10-0, in Murfreesboro, N.C., on October 30, 2013, and the nine goals scored were the most produced by the Bulldogs at home since a 9-1 win over Salem International University in 2010.
Barton will travel to Hartsville, S.C., on Wednesday night to face former league member Coker College in a 7 p.m. match before ending its season on Saturday with a 2 p.m. Homecoming match against King University.
