WILSON, N.C. – Despite falling behind midway through the first half of the match, the Barton men's soccer team completed a comeback to earn a 2-1 victory over Francis Marion University on Wednesday night at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
The visiting Patriots struck first in the match as midfielder Matthew Bainbridge corralled a pass from teammate Levi Sandmann and put a shot into the back of the net from the top of the box. The 20th minute goal was the first of the season for the FMU freshman.
Barton remained down by a goal until sophomore Tolly Beatson tied the match at 1-1 with his second goal of the season in the 28th minute of action. The midfielder received a cross from fellow second-year player Daniel Gregory and fired a shot past the Francis Marion keeper from six yards out.
The Bulldogs wasted no time taking the lead in the second half, scoring just six minutes into the period. After a shot by junior Danny Peru was deflected by the keeper, freshman defender Lorran Antonelli finished a shot from inside the box for his first career goal.
Francis Marion totaled 10 shots in the second half and 18 in the game, compared to just nine chances by the Barton offense. However, junior keeper Jens Madsen Hordvik recorded five saves in the contest to keep the Bulldog lead in tact.
Barton takes to the road once again this weekend for a non-conference matchup with Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
