PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Braves of UNC Pembroke scored a goal in each half in sending the visiting Barton Bulldogs home with a 2-1 loss in non-conference action on Wednesday night.
Barton (2-3) and Pembroke (2-2) were even in total shots with 10 apiece and shots on goal with three each, however, the Braves were able to make the most of their opportunities.
UNCP scored its first goal of the game in the 17th minute of action as Jordan Walshaw finished a one-timer in front of the Barton net to give his team a 1-0 lead.
The Pembroke lead moved to a two-goal advantage in the 71st minute on Walshaw's second goal of the match. Barton senior Alex David put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard in the 76th minute, finishing a cross from sophomore Rafael Ribiero with his head to score his third goal of the year.
BC had four shots at the goal in the final 10 minutes, but the Pembroke keeper was able to keep a clean sheet and deny the Bulldogs any chance at a tie.
Barton begins Conference Carolinas play on Saturday, Sept. 17 with a match against North Greenville University at 4 p.m. in Wilson. The Barton College men's soccer program will hold a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Benefit in conjunction with the contest and the college's Family Weekend.
The Bulldogs will wear specially designed uniforms in the contest, and those uniforms will be auctioned off following the match to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.
