WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College men's volleyball team needed four sets to defeat North Greenville University 3-1 (25-152, 19-25, 25-15, 19-25, 15-7) in a Conference Carolinas Tournament Quarterfinal matchup in Wilson Gymnasium.
The No. 3 seed Bulldogs hit .423 in the opening set of the match, committing just one error in a 25-12 victory over No. 6 seed North Greenville.
North Greenville rebounded for a 25-19 win in set two after hitting .500 as a team before BC won 25-15 in the third set of play, needing just one more set to secure a win.
The Crusaders opened the fourth set of play on a 5-0 run as Barton faced an uphill battle early on. NGU took advantage of a Barton attack error and a kill from freshman Caleb Arelus to end the set and force a deciding fifth set of play.
Barton began the final set on a 7-0 run, including four blocks at the net, to build an early lead. A kill by freshman Vasilis Mandilaris moved the Barton lead to a 12-4 advantage before another block at the net by freshman Nick Leary and junior Federico Pagliara gave Barton the victory.
Senior Pierre Tang-Taye led BC with 18 kills and a .419 hitting percentage, while Mandilaris totaled 15 kills of his own. Freshman Aleska Brkovic followed with a double-double of 14 kills and 13 digs to go along with four service aces.
Pagliara registered a match-high 47 assists with six total blocks, as Leary had eight total blocks in the middle. Freshman Kekaulike Alameda tied for the match lead with 13 digs on defense.
Barton will now take on No. 2 seed Pfeiffer University in the Conference Carolinas Tournament Semifinals on the campus of Erskine College in Due West, S.C on Friday, April 22.
