WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's volleyball team defeated Coker College 3-1 (25-9, 25-21, 24-26, 25-15) on Wednesday night in Wilson Gymnasium in its first home match since March 3.
Win the win, Barton improved its overall record to 14-4, while Coker fell to 12-7 following the second loss of the season to the Bulldogs.
BC cruised to a 25-9 opening set victory behind five service aces and holding Coker to a -.222 hitting percentage. The second set proved to be a much closer contest with Barton coming out on top 25-21 for a two-set advantage.
In the third set, Barton scored the first three points for an early lead, extending its edge to 20-12 on a Coker attacking error. The Cobras closed the set on a 14-4 run to secure a 26-24 come-from-behind victory
The Bulldogs responded with an early lead in the fourth set, moving the score to 17-10 on a kill from freshman Aleksa Brkovic. Barton outscored Coker 8-5 down the stretch, ending the match on a kill from freshman Vasilis Mandilaris to claim its second win in a row.
Senior Pierre Tang-Taye led the team with 12 kills, while Brkovic and Mandilaris each had eight kills of their own.
Sophomore Charles Hyde totaled seven kills with a .667 hitting percentage and five total blocks as junior Federico Pagliara registered his fourth double-double with a match-high 34 assists and 11 digs. Freshman Kekaulike Alameda also had 11 digs in the four-set victory.
Barton hosts NAIA opponent St. Andrews University on Friday, March 25 with first serve set for 7 p.m. in Wilson Gymnasium.
