WILSON, N.C. –The Barton men's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-20) victory over non-conference opponent Alderson Broaddus University on Saturday afternoon in Wilson Gymnasium
Barton improved to 10-3 overall and earned a series sweep over Alderson Broaddus (4-6) who the Bulldogs defeated 3-0 on February 13 in Philipp, W. Va. The Bulldogs hit .337 in the contest while holding the Battlers to a .056 hitting percentage.
Freshman Vasilis Mandilaris led all players with 13 kills and a .579 hitting percentage, while fellow freshman Aleksa Brkovic totaled 12 kills with a .550 hitting percentage, eight digs and three service aces. Junior setter Federico Pagliara finished with a match-high 39 assists as freshman libero Kekaulike Alameda recorded eight digs.
Barton began the first set scoring 11 straight points behind the services of Brkovic and three kills from senior Pierre Tang-Taye. Freshman middle blocker Nick Leary contributed two kills of his own in the opening 11-0 run as BC earned a 25-11 victory in the opening frame.
The Bulldogs got out to an early 2-0 lead in the second set, building a lead as large as 11-6 following a kill from Mandilaris midway through. An attack error by Alderson Broaddus ended the second set with Barton on top 25-21.
Alderson Broaddus led for the first time in the third set, holding a 6-5 advantage after a BC attack error. The Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 run behind the services of freshman Justice Lord to take a 12-6 lead. The Battlers could not recover from the deficit as a kill by sophomore Brandon Lee ended the set and gave Barton the match win.
Barton will host Conference Carolinas foe Erskine College on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. in the team's next match.
