WLSON, N.C. – For the second straight day the Barton baseball team defeated Glenville State College in a doubleheader at Nixon Field, picking up a 6-2 win in game one followed by a 6-3 victory in the series finale.
The Bulldogs have now won seven straight games and are 7-1 overall while the Pioneers fell to 0-7. BC outscored Glenville State 39-7 in the four-game series, racking up 13 extra-base hits and drawing 18 walks.
Game One: Barton 6, Glenville State 2 (Seven inn.)
Barton and Glenville State were scoreless through the first two innings of play in game one until the Pioneers scored the game's first run in the top of the third inning. BC responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning for an early 2-1 lead.
The Bulldogs' lead grew to a 5-1 advantage following a three-run fifth inning as junior Landon Dunlap, Calvin Hawke and Andrew Webster each drove in a run. Junior Tyler Garrett brought a run across the plate with an RBI single in the sixth inning before the Pioneers scored their final run on an RBI triple in the top of the seventh.
Garrett was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in the first game while Dunlap, Hawke and sophomore Hunter Pearre also recorded one RBI apiece. Freshman Ricks Dearing was 1-for-2 with a triple and a run scored in his first career game.
Junior Kerry Walker (2-0) picked up his second win of the season, allowing just one run on four hits with two strikeouts over 4.2 innings on the mound.
Sophomore Andrew Davis pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three batters, while senior Ricky Jernigan allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts of his own in one inning of work.
Game Two: Barton 6, Glenville State 3 (Seven inn.)
In the second game of the day, Barton and Glenville State were locked in a pitchers dual early on as just two runs were scored through the first three and half innings of play.
With the Pioneers ahead 2-0, Barton used a four-run fourth to take a 4-2 lead. Freshman Charlie Vaughan put BC on the board with an RBI single as a Dearing sacrifice fly tied the game at 2-2 with two outs on the scoreboard. Hawke gave the Bulldogs the lead with an RBI single as two runners scored on the play.
Glenville State got within one run of BC with a run in the top of the sixth but RBIs from Dearing and Garrett in the bottom of the inning put Barton ahead by three runs. Freshman right-hander Troy Masloswki shut the door in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.
Maslowski earned his second save in as many chances, allowing just one hit over two innings of relief with two strikeouts. Junior left-hander Justin Evans (2-0) was credited with the win for BC after allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work.
Hawke led the BC offense at the plate in game two, finishing 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while Dearing was 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI of his own.
Barton hosts Saint Augustine's University in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. in Wilson.
