SALISBURY, N.C. – The Barton College women's tennis team suffered its fifth consecutive defeat and second straight shutout in a 9-0 loss to Catawba College on Wednesday afternoon.
In doubles competition, the duo of senior Smiljana Kljajic and freshman Vanessa Sanoja battled hard but fell 8-6 to Catawba's Liz Renteria and Erisa Onchi in the No. 1 spot. The Indians earned two more victories at No. 2 and No.3 double for an early 3-0 lead.
Junior Dana Kelly was the only Lady Bulldog to win a set in the match, claiming a 7-5 victory over Maddie Henderson at No. 3 singles. Henderson went on to win the second set 6-2 before claiming the point with a 10-4 decision in a third-set super tiebreaker.
Kljajic was defeated 7-6, 7-6 by Liz Renteria in a tightly contested No. 1 singles matchup as the remaining four singles matches in straight sets.
Barton begins Conference Carolinas play this weekend with trips to Erskine College and Emmanuel College on back-to-back days. BC and Erskine take the court on Friday, February 19 in Due West, S.C. before the Lady Bulldogs travel to Franklin Springs, Ga. on Saturday, February 20.
