PHILIPPI, W. VA. – Freshman Vasilis Mandilaris registered a match-high 15 kills and the Barton College men's volleyball team swept host Alderson Broaddus University 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon.
Barton improved to 7-3 overall and claimed its third win in non-conference play, while Alderson Broaddus fell to 3-5 on the season. BC hit .436 as a team and committed just nine attacking errors as the defense held the Battlers to a .157 hitting percentage.
Mandilaris' kill total came on the heels of a .583 hitting percentage as senior Pierre Tang-Taye followed with nine kills and a .400 hitting percentage of his own to go with a match-high eight digs. Freshman Justice Lord totaled four kills on six attempts without an error, while junior Federico Pagliara led all players with a 38 assists and six digs in the three-set victory.
After eight ties in the early going of the first set, Barton scored the frame's final nine points behind the services of freshman Aleksa Brkovic to cruise to an 11-point win.
Barton scored the first two points of the second set and remained on top until a 4-0 run by Alderson Broaddus tied the match at 23-23. BC used a Brkovic kill and a Battler attacking error to rebound and take the second set by two points.
The two sides once again kept it close in the early stages of the third set but junior Jonathan Novoa-Miralles registered the final two kills for the Royal Blue and White to claim the sweep.
BC returns homes to host King University and Lees-McRae College next weekend in league play. The Tornado come to Wilson on Friday, February 19 for a 7 p.m. first serve while the match against the Bobcats is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 20 in Wilson Gymnasium.
