WILSON, N.C. – Barton College sophomore Dana Kelly lost just one game in earning her straight-set victory at No. 4 singles, but UNC Pembroke won the remaining matches played on Wednesday at the Barton Tennis Complex.
The Lady Bulldogs gained one point by default and the Braves claimed three points by default in arriving at a 7-2 final score in favor of UNC Pembroke.
The win snapped a five-match losing skid for the Braves, now 6-8. Barton dropped its second straight since a three-match winning streak in falling to 3-6 on the year.
UNCP's No. 1 doubles team of Leigh-Anne McAfee and Shelby Bickel downed Barton's top duo of Smiljana Kljajic and Alicia Lasry, 8-5, while the Braves' No. 2 grouping of Kelsey Vanquaethem and Gabriela van Ooststroom defeated Kelly and Lorraine Chon-Qui, 8-2.
The Braves claimed the third doubles point by default to head into singles play up 3-0. Kelly put Barton on the board with her 6-1, 6-0 victory over Hannah Ammons, but McAfee, Bickel and Monica Espitia all won in straight sets in the top three slots over Kljajic, Lasry and Chon-Qui, respectively.
The Lady Bulldogs are slated to play another non-conference match on Saturday in Hickory, N.C., against Lenoir-Rhyne University.
