BRISTOL, TENN. – The Barton College women's volleyball team was unable to claim a share of the Conference Carolinas North Division on Friday evening, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Tornado of King University.
The Tornado (17-12, 10-5) earned a 25-21 victory in the opening set of the match to take an early 1-0 lead before the Lady Bulldogs (14-11, 9-6) evened the match at one set apiece. Barton and King played to just four ties in the second set but neither team was able to pull away with BC claiming the 27-25 win.
King jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the third set, building a 7-3 advantage before the Lady Bulldogs stormed back to tie the match at 8-8 on a King attacking error. BC took the lead following a kill from junior Kaitlyn Micol, using a 9-3 run to build an insurmountable lead as the Lady Bulldogs won the third set 25-16.
In the fourth set, King took a 25-19 victory to force a fifth and final set of play. The Lady Bulldogs built a 9-2 lead in the early going of the final set, holding a 14-10 edge and needing just one point to secure a win. However, the Tornado closed the match on a 6-0 run to earn the 3-2 match victory.
Junior Mariana Kedzia led the Lady Bulldogs with 18 kills and 17 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Micol chipped in nine kills and 14 digs of her own, while freshman Angelica Acevedo totaled 37 assists and a team-high 20 digs.
Barton will end the regular season with a trip Lees-McRae College tomorrow for a 2 p.m. in Banner Elk, N.C. The Lady Bulldogs will be playing their first outright North Division title in the NCAA Division II era.
