DUE WEST, S.C. – Competing in the Conference Carolinas Semifinals for the first time since the 2010 season, the Barton College women's volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 25-21) to the South Division No. 1 seed Erskine College on Saturday night.
Barton, the No 2 seed from the North Division, hit just .107 as a team but totaled nine service aces in the contest. In comparison, the Flying Fleet hit .170 as a team and held a 90-78 advantage in digs as their defense led the way to victory.
Freshman Hayley Marshburn led the attack for Barton, recording 13 kills and 12 digs for her eighth double-double of the season.
Juniors Mariana Kedzia and Kaitlyn Micol each finished with eight kills, chipping in 16 and 12 digs, respectively. Sophomore Laura Peed led the team with 20 digs, while freshman Angelica Acevedo totaled 34 assists and 15 digs in the loss.
Erskine hit .341 as a team in the opening set of play to build a 1-0 lead before Barton even the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 victory in set two. The Lady Bulldogs held the Flying Fleet to a .024 hitting percentage to earn the set win.
The Lady Bulldogs built an 11-7 lead midway through the third set before the Fleet battled back to tie the set at 11-11 and take a 12-11 lead on back-to-back kills from Kelly Sullivan. Erskine closed the set on a 13-9 run to secure the set victory and build a 2-1 match lead.
BC trailed by as large a margin as 21-11 late in the fourth set before making a comeback effort. Following a kill from Marshburn, BC used a 6-1 run to cut the Erskine lead to a four-point advantage. However, the lead was too much to overcome for BC as Erskine advanced to the tournament championship with a 25-21 win.
