WILSON, N.C. – Despite holding a lead at intermission, the Barton College men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to visiting UNC Pembroke in overtime on Wednesday night at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
The Barton (1-11-1) offense came alive in the match, earning a 12-11 edge in total shots as both the Bulldogs and Braves (5-5-2) fired seven shots on goal. BC keeper Jens Madsen Hordvik collected four saves in the defeat.
Following an early foul, sophomore Tyler Dew scored his first career goal just 58 seconds into the match after finishing a free kick from the foot of freshman Tolly Beatson. The Braves evened the score at 1-1 in the 7th minute of play as Jordan Walshaw took advantage of a free kick for his fourth goal of the season.
The Bulldogs and Braves put pressure on one another throughout the opening half as senior Jovan Gracia gave Barton a 2-1 lead in the 40th minute. Beatson once again sent a free kick into the box where Gracia used his head to score his second goal of the year.
BC's halftime lead held for a good portion of the second half until Pembroke's Tyler Santee tied the match at 2-2 with a goal in the 77th minute on an assist from Josh Phelps.
Once the regulation whistle sounded and the match remained tied, Barton and Pembroke looked to extra time to settle the score.
The Bulldogs gained an edge in the first five minutes of the overtime period as the Braves were given a red card and were forced to play with just 10 players. However, Pembroke broke through as Josh Hanratty crashed the goal on a free kick from Waslshaw and finished with a header in the 98th minute to give UNCP the road win.
Barton will play its final home match of the 2015 season on Saturday, Oct. 24 when the Bulldogs host Emmanuel College at 3 p.m. in Wilson. The Royal Blue and White will honor its senior class during the game as part of Barton College Homecoming festivities.
