HARTSVILLE, S.C.-Barton College held a 2-1 lead after doubles but Coker College won four of six singles matches to rally for a narrow 5-4 Conference Carolinas women's tennis victory Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Cobras (5-2 Overall, 3-2 Conf.) remain undefeated at home at 4-0. The Lady Bulldogs (2-4, 1-2) were unable to win on consecutive days after defeating Converse on Friday.
Senior Jaime Galasso (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was the only Barton player to win both her singles and doubles match. Galasso teamed up with sophomore Francesca Del Pozo (Lima, Peru) for an exciting 9-7 win before winning at No. 4 singles 7-5, 6-4. Galasso and Del Pozo boast a 3-2 doubles record on the spring season.
Freshman No. 5 Carol Fischer (Socorro, Brazil) had the Lady Bulldogs other singles win with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win.
Galasso (3-2) and Fischer (3-3) are tied for the team lead with three singles wins apiece.
Barton maintained its one-point lead with the help of a dominating 8-1 win by freshman Mika Deane (Auckland, New Zealand) and sophomore Lindsey Frederick (Goldsboro, N.C.), who are undefeated at 2-0 paired together.
Del Pozo gave the Bulldogs a great chance at the minor upset taking her counterpart to a third set before falling 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2.
Barton will host non-conference Shaw University in a rescheduled matched from earlier in the season on Thursday at 2 p.m.
