WILSON, N.C.-The Barton College women's tennis team won 4-of-6 singles matches to edge Conference Carolinas rival Lees-McRae College 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman Mika Deane (5-6) outlasted Christine Vanard at No. 1 singles 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 for the victorious Lady Bulldogs. The rookie has won three straight.
Barton improved to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the conference with the help of straight set wins by senior No. 4 Jaime Galasso (6-1, 6-1), freshman No. 5 Carol Fischer (6-2, 6-3) and sophomore Francesca Del Pozo (6-1, 6-2).
Galasso (6-3) and Fischer (6-5) continue to lead BC with six wins apiece.
Junior No. 3 Lindsay Toth jumped out to a one-set lead after sweeping the first frame 6-0 but her counterpart rallied to take the match in three (0-6, 6-3, 6-2).
Lees-McRae jumped out to 2-1 lead after doubles with victories in the top two pairings. Galasso and Del Pozo prevented the doubles sweep by squeaking out a 9-8 (7-5) win. Galasso-Del Pozo evened their record together at 5-5.
Deane and sophomore Lindsey Frederick took the Lady Bobcats top tandem to a tie breaker before falling 9-8 (7-1). Deane-Frederick still boast a 5-2 doubles record.
Barton will go for its third consecutive victory on Thursday when the Lady Bulldogs entertain the Braves of UNC Pembroke at 3 p.m.
