WILSON, N.C.-Senior Jaime Galasso and freshmen Mika Deane and Carol Fischer all produced big singles wins for Barton College en route to a 5-3 non-conference women's tennis victory over visiting North Greenville University Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Bulldogs end a three-match skid, improving to 3-6 overall. The Crusaders maintain a 3-3 overall ledger after suffering the loss.
With the score 4-3 and NGU leading the final singles match, Fischer (Socorro, Brazil) secured the Barton victory with a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 marathon win at No. 5 singles. Galasso (Winston-Salem, N.C.) put the Bulldogs to within one point of victory with her three-set (6-2, 1-6, 6-1) victory at No. 4.
Fischer (5-4) and Galasso (5-3) lead Barton with five singles wins apiece.
Deane kept the Bulldogs ahead with a solid performance in the top position in the lineup by winning 6-2, 6-1. The rookie has a 3-6 singles record.
The Lady Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead into singles play on the strength of doubles wins at the top two flights. No. 2 tandem of junior Fischer and Lindsay Toth (Sewickley, Pa.) gave Barton a quick lead with an easy 8-2 win but NGU tied the match with an 8-6 victory at No. 3. Deane and sophomore Lindsey Frederick (Goldsboro, N.C.) seized the final doubles point in dramatic fashion. Trailing 8-7, the duo won the next the next game to force a tie breaker that they won 7-2 to secure 9-8 victory.
Deane/Frederick boast a impressive 4-1 record paired together after battling back for the win.
The Crusaders got singles wins from junior No. 3 Katherine Shaw (Lilburn, Ga.) and senior No. 6 Natalie Stewart (Anderson, S.C.) in straight sets.
Barton and North Greenville will both continue to compete at the BC Tennis Complex in the 2011 Barton Duals on Friday and Saturday.
