Bulldogs tennis splits at Winston-Salem State

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-The Barton College tennis teams split a pair of 7-2 matches at Winston-Salem State University on Monday afternoon with the men winning and the women taking the loss.

Barton men jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play and then won 4-of-6 singles matches en route to the 7-2 win. The No. 15 Southeast Region ranked Bulldogs improved to 5-3 overall while the Rams fell to 4-6. BC is 3-1 on the road.

The Bulldogs posted identical 8-5 wins in all three doubles matches with senior Cesar Grobel (Sao Paulo, Brazil) paired with freshman Gabriel Araujo (Recife, Brazil), senior Diego Salinas (Mexico City, Mexico) teamed with junior Renato Mendes (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and senior Leandro Peron (Santana de Parnaiba, Brazil) partnered with junior P.A. Desilets (Beloeil, Canada).

Araujo (6-1, 6-4), Desilets (6-1, 6-0), Salinas (6-1, 6-1) and Peron (6-0, 6-1) all won their singles bouts in straight sets.

Desilets improved his overall singles record to an impressive 6-1 mark in the third position in the lineup by winning is sixth consecutive tilt after suffering a season-opening loss.

Grobel, the reigning Conference Carolinas Player of the Week, had to default due to injury.

On the women's side, the Lady Bulldogs were unable to overcome an 0-3 deficit after doubles competition as Winston-Salem State prevailed 7-2.

The Lady Rams completed the victory by winning the top four singles draws. WSSU boasts a 7-1 overall record after recording its seventh consecutive victory.

The freshmen duo of Carol Fischer (Socorro, Brazil) and No. 6 Kristy Lievense (Wilson, N.C.) prevented the shutout with singles wins for the Lady Bulldogs, who dipped to 2-6 this spring.

Fischer won 8-4 in the fifth slot in the lineup to improve her singles record to .500 at 4-4. Lievense picked up her first collegiate win in the sixth spot by a score of 8-2.

Barton next hosts North Greenville University on Thursday at 3 p.m., before hosting the annual Barton Duals this coming weekend.
