GREENVILLE, N.C.-The Barton College women's tennis team prepped for the start of its Conference Carolinas season with a tough road test at NCAA Division I East Carolina University on Saturday afternoon.
The host Pirates swept competition, 7-0, and maintain a 3-1 spring record.
The Lady Bulldogs will enter league play with a 1-2 overall ledger. Barton entertains Conference Carolinas preseason favorite and No. 49 nationally ranked Erskine College on Friday at 2 p.m.
East Carolina swept doubles play by scores of 8-4, 8-1, and 8-1 to earn the first point of the match (DI scoring system).
Freshman Mika Deane (Auckland, New Zealand) almost stole a point in the top singles match for the Bulldogs. After losing the first set 6-0, Deane rallied for a hard fought 7-6 win to force a tiebreaker that she lost 1-0.
Sophomore No. 2 Lindsey Frederick (Goldsboro, N.C.), freshman No. 4 Carol Fischer (Socorro, Brazil), and sophomore No. 5 Francesca Del Pozo (Lima, Peru) all won at least one game against their respective DI foes.
Freshman Kristy Lievense (Wilson, N.C.) competed in both doubles and singles play to garner her first collegiate dual match experience.
