WILSON, N.C. - The Barton College football team will now return to its regular season of competition on Saturday when the Bulldogs host Newberry in the Fall 2021 opener at 2:00 p.m., on Electric Supply Company Field at Truist Stadium.
Barton and Newberry played last year as part of the Bulldogs' abbreviated four-game slate in the spring as the initial season was shifted due to COVID-19. The Wolves pulled out a 20-17 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday, March 27, on Barton's home turf.
Newberry is a part of the South Atlantic Conference, a league which the Bulldogs will become an Associate Member for football in 2022 and 2023.   The Wolves went 5-1 last spring and are coached by Todd Knight, who is in his 13th year at the helm.
Barton, who reintroduced football in 2020 after a 70-year hiatus, pretty much returns their entire squad. Redshirt freshman
Jaquan Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) gets the nod behind center after passing for 393 yards and three scores in addition to 178 yards on the ground and a touchdown. The dual-threat Lynch will be backed up by redshirt freshman
Tyler Flippen (Summerfield, N.C.), who passed 188 yards and a touchdown while seeing significant action last spring as well.
Redshirt freshman running back
Jordan Terrell (Ramseur, N.C.), the team's MVP last year, heads the ground game after rushing for a team-leading 280 yards and three touchdowns. Terrell also ranked first on the squad in receptions with 11.
The wide receiver position is spearheaded up by redshirt freshman
Kameron Johnson (Rocky Mount, N.C.), who caught 10 passes for 80 yards while redshirt freshman wideout
Jackson Perrell (Lexington, N.C.) is a threat from the outside after averaging 44 yards per catch. Look for junior wide receiver
Nate Byers (Trinity, N.C.) to be in the mix as well.
On defense, redshirt freshman defensive back
Franklin Wheeler (Fayetteville, N.C.) led the Bulldogs with 30 tackles to go along with an interception while junior defensive end
Dionte Osbey (Anderson, S.C.) will be leaned on to make more big plays. Last year, Osbey led the squad with four quarterback sacks and a forced fumble.Â
The Newberry contest is the first of five home games for the Bulldogs. Barton also host No. 24 Carson-Newman (Oct. 2), No. 24 Wingate (Oct. 16) and No. 6 Lenoir-Rhyne (Nov. 6) later in the year while the Bulldogs entertain first-year program Bluefield State (Oct. 30) as part of Homecoming Weekend.
Barton is coached by
Chip Hester, a former 11-year mentor of Catawba College (2002-12) who previously stop including a stint as Defensive Coordinator at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C.
