VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Barton men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened the 2021-22 season with a strong performance Sunday at the KMS Opener at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
On the men's side, seniors
Quante Downey (Nashville, N.C.) and
Chianti Ghee (Fayetteville, N.C.) won the pole vault (13'0") and weight throw (49'9"), respectively, for the Bulldogs.
Meanwhile, Barton sophomore
Amando Robles (Wilson, N.C.) and freshman
Justin Copper (High Point, N.C.) took home a pair of top-four finishes. Robles took third in the one-mile run (4:37) and fourth in the 3,000-meter run (9:10) while Copper crossed the finish line third in the 200-meter dash (22.68) and fourth in the 400-meter dash (51.05).
In the women's competition, senior
Tytionna Spates (Jacksonville, N.C.) won the weight throw (39'1") and took third place in the shot put (34'2") to lead the Bulldogs. In addition, Barton seniors
Hailey Russell (Jacksonville, N.C.) and
Morgan Lane (Elm City, N.C.) were runners-up in the 600-meter run (1:44.56) and one-mile run (5:57) while senior
Ashley Teilborg (Sneads Ferry, N.C.) took second in the women's weight throw (37'4").
Barton had two athletes in the top four in the women's one-mile run with junior
Isabel Reed (Wilson, N.C.) taking fourth place with a time of 6:17.
The Barton indoor track and field teams next compete in the Mondo College Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Saturday, January 15.
